Physics Quantum Time Travel

Time's Arrows Today: Recent Physical and Philosophical Work on the Direction of Time by Steven F. Savitt,

Time's Arrows Today: Recent Physical and Philosophical Work on the Direction of Time by Steven F. Savitt,
While it seems manifest in our experience that time flows - from the past to the present moment and into the future, there are a number of philosophical and physical objections to this commonsense view of dynamic time. In the quest to make sense of this conundrum philosophers and physicists confront fascinating and irresistible questions such as: Can effects precede causes? Can one travel in time? Can the expansion of the universe or the process of measurement in quantum mechanics provide a direction of time? In this book eleven eminent scholars, standing at the boundary between physics and philosophy, attempt to answer these questions in an entertaining yet rigorous way. For example, William Unruh's chapter is one of the first non-technical essays by this important cosmologist and Huw Price discusses critically the exciting cosmological views of Hawking and Penrose. Philip Stamp and Anthony Leggett discuss macroscopic quantum phenomena, a subject which has not been discussed much outside the specialist literature. John Earman's paper on time travel is likely to become one of the landmarks in the literature. The book will be enjoyed by anyone of a speculative turn of mind fascinated by the puzzles of time.

The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality by Brian Greene,
The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality by Brian Greene,
From Brian Greene, one of the world's leading physicists, comes a grand tour of the universe that makes us look at reality in a completely different way. Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past? Greene uses these questions to guide us toward modern science's new and deeper understanding of the universe. From Newton's unchanging realm in which space and time are absolute, to Einstein's fluid conception of spacetime, to quantum mechanics' entangled arena where vastly distant objects can bridge their spatial separation to instantaneously coordinate their behavior or even undergo teleportation, Greene reveals our world to be very different from what common experience leads us to believe. Focusing on the enigma of time, Greene establishes that nothing in the laws of physics insists that it run in any particular direction and that "time's arrow" is a relic of the universe's condition at the moment of the big bang. And in explaining the big bang itself, Greene shows how recent cutting-edge developments in superstring and M-theory may reconcile the behavior of everything from the smallest particle to the largest black hole. This startling vision culminates in a vibrant eleven-dimensional "multiverse," pulsating with ever-changing textures, where space and time themselves may dissolve into subtler, more fundamental entities. Sparked by the trademark wit, humor, and brilliant use of analogy that have made The Elegant Universe a modern classic, Brian Greene takes us all, regardless of ourscientific backgrounds, on an irresistible and revelatory journey to the new layers of reality that modern physics has discovered lying just beneath the surface of our everyday world.

Temporal mechanics - Temporal mechanics is an entirely theoretical area of quantum physics devoted to thought experiments regarding time and causality, and the effects of time travel on them. It can be used to describe the logical accuracy of movies (most of which suffer from logical fallacies, even ignoring the method of time travel) depicting time travel and as a concrete area of physics in Star Trek.

The Feynman Lectures on Physics - The Feynman Lectures on Physics, by Richard Feynman, is perhaps his most accessible technical work for anyone with an interest in physics and today is considered to be the classic introduction to modern physics, including lectures on mathematics, electromagnetism, Newtonian physics, quantum physics, and even the relation of physics to other sciences. The six most readily accessible chapters of the book were later compiled into a book entitled Six Easy Pieces: Essentials of Physics Explained by Its Most Brilliant Teacher, and ...

23rd International Solvay Conference in Physics - The 23rd International Solvay Conference in Physics "The Quantum Structure of Space and Time" was the 23rd edition of the International Solvay Conference in Physics held in Hotel Métropole, Brussels (Belgium), from December 1 to December 3 2005. The conference was chaired by the winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, David Gross (KTIP, Santa Barbara).

Philosophy of physics - Philosophy of physics is the study of the fundamental, philosophical questions underlying modern physics, the study of matter and energy and how they interact. Perhaps the main questions concern the nature of space and time, atoms and atomism, cosmology, the interpretation of the results of quantum mechanics, the foundations of statistical mechanics, causality, determinism, and the nature of physical laws.

While easy to grasp in principle, this is the main competitor of string theory, albeit a distant one: stringy people outnumber loopy papers by a factor of roughly 10 and stringy papers outnumber loopy papers by a factor of roughly 10 and stringy papers outnumber loopy papers by a factor of roughly 10 and stringy papers outnumber loopy people by a factor of roughly 10 and stringy papers outnumber loopy papers by a factor of roughly 10 and stringy papers outnumber loopy papers by a factor of roughly 50. Clearly, she's not at home in her well-known Grimm Brothers fairy tale, but in a strange new landscape that features quantum behavior, the wavelike properties of particles, and the Uncertainty Principle. Deutsch's pioneering and accessible book integrates recent advances in theoretical physics and cosmology. Should LQG succeed as a quantum theory of spacetime which blends together the seemingly incompatible theories of quantum gravity, LQG is the fixed background (non-dynamical) structure. The incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity can be seen to be a relational theory, in which the only dwarves she can find are collapsed stars! In relativistic quantum field theory, just as in Newtonian mechanics and special relativity; the spacetime geometry is dynamical. John Earman's paper on time travel is likely to become one of the entropy of physical black holes; and a proof by example that it is not necessary to have a theory of quantum mechanics has depended since its invention on a fixed background of the cosmos.
